Q. What is the best way to utilize the recycled used cooking oil?
A. LOCAL BIODIESEL IS THE MOST SUSTAINABLE and RENEWABLE PURPOSE for this recycled resource so
we may begin to solve our problem of depending on increasingly costly
and diminishing petroleum sources. We DO NOT provide it to collectors who sell it to overseas markets or for cattle feed! Both these choices contribute to an unsustainable and ultimately destructive outcome, making humans and cattle sick. The best use for local recycled cooking oil is to keep it local for locally produced biofuel. Sacramento Cooking Oil Recycling Campaign is the only local oil recycling service that can assure this resource will be kept local. Please join us.
Here are some common questions and answers regarding price:

What is the price for biodiesel?"About the same or more than petro diesel" is the short answer, so buying commercially produced biodiesel through the conventional market supply and demand influences will not likely save a diesel driver any money over petro diesel.

Why would I buy biodiesel if it won't save me money (benefits)?
There are many benefits to using biodiesel over petro diesel and, other than running a diesel engine, the two fuels have little in common so comparing them could be irrelevant. Which benefits of using locally produced, B100 made from locally recycled cooking oil do you care about?:

Biodiesel is an easy, inexpensive first step toward making energy solutions real now before petroleum reaches peak to avoid panic.

Biodiesel supports local businesses and economy.

Biodiesel is made from crops that are renewable for an ongoing but seasonally limited supply.

Biodiesel emissions are non toxic.

Biodiesel has a higher lubricity which helps the engine run smoother and longer.

Using biodiesel sets a healthy example for our children and will leave them a healthy legacy.

It is not necessary to invade countries or kill anyone to gain access to biodiesel.

Biodiesel decentralizes power, naturally and peacefully.

Biodiesel is primarily carbon neutral.

Biodiesel smells good.

Running on biodiesel is just plain fun!

Why is the price for biodiesel about the same or more than petro diesel?
As shoppers compare prices between the two fuels on the open market, some predictable principles of supply and demand prevail as long as buyers keep wanting the lowest price and sellers keep wanting the greatest profit. Unless there is some kind of intervening policy or behavior introduced, the price for biodiesel sold in these conventional market conditions cannot go below petro diesel prices without the biodiesel supply diminishing as buyers buy it up when the price is lower. A diminished biodiesel supply makes the value and price go up for any remaining feedstock oil (what biodiesel is made from) in turn causing the biodiesel price to go up until it is equal to or greater than petro diesel prices causing the buying frenzy to taper off. Whenever the petro prices have risen above the biodiesel prices, the entire biodiesel supply gets purchased quickly by price shoppers leading to shortage related market and pricing phenomenon taking hold throughout the supply and manufacturing process. This phenomenon is even leading to bidding wars for the waste restaurant cooking oil in many areas.

How can I save money with biodiesel?
Making biodiesel ourselves is one way of being in control of our costs, either individually or collectively, by getting out of the conventional market supply and demand influences. This still leaves the feedstock and methanol costs to deal with unless we grow and make those ourselves too. It is also possible to organize individuals and groups to purchase biodiesel collaboratively, as we do through Sac Biofuels Network, which makes buying and delivery more efficient to help bring the cost down.

SBN assists people to both make biodiesel and buy it collaboratively and more efficiently. Contact Steve Bash at steve@theinfoexchange.org if either of these options interests you.
They are two different substances that will both serve as a fuel in a diesel engine. When you are shopping for your diesel vehicle, please be aware that you do NOT have to “convert” or modify a diesel car to run on BIODIESEL. SVO, however, does require modifications or "conversion kits", usually involving heaters, to run safely in a diesel engine.

Biodiesel is made from vegetable oil to be thinner than vegetable oil so it will flow in the fuel lines more easily than SVO and can run in any stock diesel engine without any modifications or “conversions” to the vehicle. Biodiesel is made from vegetable oil by chemically "thinning" the vegetable oil into a new substance which has similar flow characteristics to conventional petroleum diesel.

If you want to run your diesel vehicle on SVO, that DOES require modifications or converting the vehicle to deal with the flow and combustion problems caused from the thickness of vegetable oil, especially in cooler temperatures. The conversion usually involves adding heating devises at locations along the fuel system to heat the oil to thin it so it will flow smoothly and ignite properly in the engine.

Biodiesel is already thinned enough to run in any diesel vehicle without any conversions or heaters added to the vehicle.

Contact the blog host, Steve Bash, for info on SVO and conversions.

[Technorati tags: biodiesel, Sacramento]Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09548864876106822054noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12285066.post-36546511177755364572008-04-13T22:29:00.000-07:002022-02-05T16:26:29.327-08:00New Biodiesel Supply Site in Sacramento! -Now fullSacramento Biofuels Network now has another biodiesel supply site (-now at membership capacity- contact Steve Bash at steve@theinfoexchange.org for info on how to purchase biodiesel.)

Quality verification- All suppliers must show astm certification or better to verify fuel quality from the manufacturer.

2. Locally produced and/or grown- Form relationships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors as local as possible.

3. Support practices of sustainability - Form relationships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors that support practices of ecological sustainability such as: utilizing waste oil feedstock before virgin oil, sustainably grown feedstock that is non GMO, no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, organically grown whenever possible and deliver the biodiesel in trucks that run on biodiesel.

4. Support cooperative business models- Form relationships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors that support models of business that are equitable, transparent and cooperative and encourage consumer empowerment.

5. Price/value considerations- Price is always an important consideration but only after the previous priorities have been considered.

6. Consistency of supply- Although biodiesel is a renewable fuel, the capacity of supply is limited by the biological nature of its source. Adapting our energy use and expectations in balance with ecological systems and natural resource interdependency is essential for healthy coexistence and sustenance of life. Consistency of supply is only relevant in SBN buying practices as the ecological sustainability of the sources indicate. As the global petroleum reserves reach peak of production, a new awareness regarding consistency of supply will be upon us, if it isn't already.

[Technorati tags: biodiesel, Sacramento]Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09548864876106822054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12285066.post-77000045863990430102007-11-14T16:09:00.000-08:002007-11-21T15:35:30.817-08:00Considerations for Using Biodiesel WiselyHere are the 4 primary considerations SBN advises all new users for using biodiesel safely and responsibly (taken from the generic membership agreement):

1. Material Compatibility - I understand that biodiesel can accelerate the break down of rubber fuel hoses and gaskets causing them to leak. Vehicles made before 1994 probably have rubber fuel hoses and gaskets and will need to be replaced either before or upon failure with biodiesel compatible hoses and gaskets such as Viton. Check with the vehicle manufacturer.

2. Cold Flow - I understand that biodiesel may need to be “winterized” in colder temperatures by mixing a sufficient percentage of petro diesel (5% or more), kerosene and/or anti gel additives with the biodiesel, depending on the temperatures the car is in, to keep the fuel flowing properly. Depending on the source and quality, biodiesel can begin to first cloud, and then gel between 25F- 45F. It is advisable to test your current fuel to know the temperature it begins to cloud.

3. Cleaning Effect - I understand that the solvent characteristics of biodiesel will loosen and “clean out” the petroleum based diesel sediments that stick and accumulate in the fuel system over time. This dislodged diesel sediment can clog the fuel filter and require monitoring and possibly changing the fuel filter within the first few tankfuls of biodiesel. A clogged filter may cause the car to stall and fail to start. It is advisable to have a new fuel filter on hand and be ready to replace it if the symptoms arise.

4. Warranty - I understand that the use of pure biodiesel (B100) or blends above B20 may void my vehicle warranty. Check with vehicle manufacturer about what percentage of biodiesel is currently accepted by them.

[Technorati tags: biodiesel, Sacramento]Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09548864876106822054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12285066.post-1118852183830840242007-10-15T09:14:00.000-07:002022-02-05T16:27:55.903-08:00Biodiesel Homebrew Classes Back By RequestLearn how to make biodiesel by private or group classes, now arranged by appointment. Grassroots biodiesel maker Steve Bash will host a workshop on making your own biodiesel this Friday, June 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. at his home in Fair Oaks, CA.
Attendees at the classroom-style workshop will:
--Witness first-hand the process of making a 40-gallon batch from start to finish.
--Learn where & how to get all supplies needed.
--Learn about collecting used cooking oil from restaurants.
--Learn the process for testing the used oil for quality - titration
--Learn water washing and fuel quality verification
--Many insights and tricks to save you time and money
--Books and videos will be available for sale, and much more.
Attendees will be guided on how to make this vegetable-oil based fuel, which will run in any diesel engine. For several years Steve has made biodiesel in his garage from free used restaurant cooking oil to demonstrate that sustainable fuel options exist and can be implemented now.
Steve says biodiesel is "grease for peace!"
The cost of the class is $75, enrollment limited to 5 people. Please email Steve at steve@theinfoexchange.org for more info or to register and receive directions. Payment may be made by cash, Visa or Mastercard, or a check. (Credit card or check not processed until the day of the event.)
Feel free to pass this on to others who may be interested!

Tote1
Originally uploaded by BlogAdmin.

Biodiesel is a vegetable oil based fuel that can be safely used in any diesel engine without modification. No "conversion" to the diesel vehicle or engine is necessary. It does not contribute to global warming and offers substantial reductions in emissions over petroleum-based diesel fuel. And, biodiesel contributes to engine life and performance due to its higher lubricity.

This renewable, cleaner burning fuel is available for purchase in various locations throughout the greater Sacramento area through a network of consumer membership co-ops, thanks to the organizing efforts of biodiesel booster Steve Bash of The Information Exchange. Access to biodiesel
through this grassroots network depends on the membership capacity of each coop site and currently only two sites are accepting new members. To expand availability to the latest wave of local biodiesel purchasers, more "fill-up" sites are needed. This means more people are needed
who are able to host a "tote", which is a small tank to store biodiesel at their home or business.

These heavy duty plastic totes are available in 275 to 330 gallon sizes which occupy a space about 4 feet by 4 feet square and 4 feet tall. A host site can simply be a residential garage, a shed or an industrial warehouse with vehicle accessibility. Since biodiesel is nontoxic, biodegradable, and not directly flammable, it is completely safe and legal to store in these plastic tote containers above ground with only maintenance considerations for potential leaks or spills.

All new tote hosts will be provided with complete guidance for smooth set up and operation through a sample Biodiesel Buyers Co-op Agreement and are free to determine all terms of operation such as designated fill-up times and the number of members to be accommodated. Once set up, they can take advantage of periodic biodiesel group purchasing sessions organized with the other local tote hosts to receive greater quantity price discounts and shipping charge reductions. Totes are generally refueled by a medium size tanker truck by pump and hose without the tote itself needing to be moved.

The initial equipment expenses usually include only the cost of the tote, pump and filter. If the host fronts the cost of these initial equipment expenses, they are generally recouped through membership or service fees by agreement with the members, separate from the price of the fuel which is sold at cost. Discounts and purchasing assistance is available for all these initial equipment items regardless of who fronts the cost.

All the biodiesel provided through the group purchasing sessions for any of the Sacramento co-ops is ASTM certified for quality, the highest standard in the business. And whenever possible, sources are from recycled cooking oil rather than the less sustainable raw feedstocks
from soybean oil.

The more tote sites we can get running in Sacramento, the more likely we can bring down the price of biodiesel in the area and make it a real alternative to petroleum fuels. So step forward to host a tote, or recommend someone who can!
